Sending Emails from IT Service View - SMTP and Outlook (Exchange)
Serio IT Service View can send emails to notify people when it detects problems with Windows Computers or other devices it is monitoring. IT Service View Pro allows you to Schedule reports and have these email to you, your colleagues or your customers.
For sending emails, you have 2 options:
- Use an SMTP server
- Use Outlook through Extended MAPI
Which you choose depends on your available email resources. Microsoft Exchange users may prefer the Outlook option.
SMTP Servers are the most widely used type of email server on the Internet – if you use programs such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Outlook Express, you are probably using an SMTP server.
Outlook through MAPI is a good choice if you use a Microsoft Exchange server to send emails, and use Outlook 2003 onwards already. This option requires you to have Outlook already installed.
Using an SMTP Server
Serio IT Service View can use an SMTP to send you email notifications (SMTP is the most widely used email protocol, supported by most common email servers). It requires you to provide the following data. If you use Thunderbird or Outlook Express, it's almost certain IT Service View will need the same information.
- Host (Email Server) Name – This is the name or IP address of your email server. If you don't know, ask your email administrator or ISP.
- Your Display Name – When Serio IT Service View sends an email, this is the name that is displayed to the recipient in the 'sender' field. For example, you might choose 'IT Service View monitor'.
- Your Email Address – This is the address that will be used as the sender's email address. It makes sense to use your own or a colleague's email address here, in case one of the recipients wishes to reply.
Outlook Through MAPI
When you use Outlook and MAPI to send emails in IT Service View, what happens is that IT Service View simply hands the email over to Outlook where it is placed in the 'Outbox' ready for sending. This means that Outlook will need to be running (and working) when you perform your test.
Troubleshooting Outlook and MAPI
Make sure that Outlook is running on your computer.
Make sure that you can send emails with your Outlook program if you have just installed it.
If the email is sitting in your Outbook without being sent, you need to make
Outlook send emails automatically. Check your Outlook send/receive settings
to ensure that when both Online and Offline Outlook periodically tries to send
email messages.
