Configuring Serio IT Service View to Listen for SNMP Traps

See also: Monitoring SNMP Traps Roadmap.

SNMP Traps are messages that network devices such as routers, PCs, switches, or printers send out when they detect a problem.

In order to detect SNMP Traps, you need to ensure that Serio IT Service View is correctly configured to listen for SNMP Traps.

To configure Serio IT Service View to Listen for SNMP Traps,

  1. If Serio IT Service View is online, then go Offline.

  1. From the 'Setup' menu, choose 'SNMP Settings'.

  1. Fill in the 'General' tab page as follows:

  • 'Use the following IP Address for listening/sending...' You only need to fill this in if the computer running Serio IT Service View has multiple IP Addresses (multi-homed). If it does, enter the IP Address of the network card you want to use to listen for SNMP Traps. If the computer running Serio IT Service View does not have multiple IP Addresses, then leave this field blank.

  • 'Listen for Incoming Traps on this port' This is the TCP/IP Port number on which Serio IT Service View should listen for SNMP Traps. You will supply this port number to any devices that you configure to send SNMP Traps to Serio IT Service View. The default value is 162 – we recommend you do not change this unless it conflicts with another application running on the same computer as Serio IT Service View.

  • 'Send SNMP Requests starting at this port' This relates to SNMP Requests rather than SNMP Traps. Leave as is.

  1. Click 'Ok'.
